Are Adjustable Pillows Worth It?
Being able to change a pillow's height sounds useful. For some sleepers it genuinely can be — but adjustability isn't automatically better, and sometimes a conventional pillow is the simpler answer.

Most pillows ask you to decide whether they're right before you've slept on them. An adjustable pillow at least allows for a little negotiation.
So are they worth it? An adjustable pillow can be worthwhile if you're uncertain about loft, change sleeping position, or simply value being able to fine-tune the feel. But if you're already comfortable on a conventional fixed pillow, you don't necessarily gain anything from adjustability.
1. What is an adjustable pillow?
“Adjustable” isn't one construction. Common approaches include loose filling that can be taken out or topped up, removable foam pieces or cubes, and removable layers.
The main purpose is the same in each case: to alter the pillow's effective loft, its feel, or both. Not every adjustable pillow lets you change height and firmness independently — in many designs, changing one also changes the other.
2. The real advantage: you don't have to get the height right first time
As we explain in How High Should Your Pillow Be?, a suitable pillow height depends partly on your sleeping position, your body proportions, how much the pillow compresses and the mattress beneath you. There is no single measurement that suits everyone.
Being able to add or remove filling gives you a practical way of experimenting with that over a few nights, rather than committing to one fixed height in advance. That is a convenience, not a proven health benefit: research does not show that adjustable pillows produce better spinal alignment or better sleep.
3. Two different examples
Two pillows in The Pillow Edit illustrate how differently adjustability can be built. These are examples of construction, based on each manufacturer's published description — not evidence that either is superior.
The Simba Hybrid Pillow: Simba says its Nanocube core can be added to or removed to adjust height and firmness.
The Woolroom Deluxe Washable Wool Pillow: Woolroom's UK product uses loose wool filling that can be removed, with additional filling available if you want more depth. Woolroom currently describes its firmness as “Adjustable Feel”.
4. Where adjustability can be useful
Adjustability tends to earn its place in particular situations:
- You're unsure whether you prefer a lower or higher loft.
- Your existing pillow feels nearly right, but not quite.
- You change position during the night.
- You've changed mattress and your previous pillow now feels different.
- People in your household have different preferences.
5. The disadvantages nobody puts in the headline
Adjustability comes with trade-offs worth weighing honestly:
- Experimentation: finding the right amount of filling may take several nights rather than giving an instant answer.
- Mess and storage: removed loose fill or foam needs somewhere clean to be kept.
- Maintenance: depending on the construction, loose fillings may need redistributing or fluffing from time to time.
- Complexity: some people would simply rather buy a conventional pillow that feels right from the start.
- Price: adjustable construction can cost more, though that doesn't automatically mean better quality or a better fit for you.
6. Adjustable doesn't mean infinitely adjustable
Every adjustable pillow still has limits, set by its outer shell, its construction and the amount and type of filling inside.
Removing filling also changes more than a number on a ruler. Depending on the construction, it may alter how the pillow feels and how much it resists your head. “Adjustable” shouldn't be read as “will fit everyone”.

7. How we'd choose one
Look at how a pillow adjusts, not merely whether the word “adjustable” appears on the box. It's worth considering:
- Removable filling versus removable layers.
- The practical range of adjustment.
- What happens to the filling you take out.
- Care instructions for the cover and the filling.
- The trial or return period.
- Whether you'd realistically bother adjusting it.
8. When a fixed pillow makes more sense
If you already know the loft and feel you prefer, a well-chosen fixed pillow may be the simpler choice — and potentially a cheaper one. Adjustability is a feature, not a prerequisite for a good pillow.
Are they worth paying more for?
There isn't a universal yes or no. The premium is easier to justify when adjustability solves a genuine uncertainty about height or feel. If it won't be used, it becomes another feature you're paying for unnecessarily.
The Pillow Edit includes both adjustable and fixed designs because neither approach is inherently better — they're simply suited to different sleepers.
The Velquies view
Adjustability is useful when it solves a problem. If you're never going to open the pillow and change what's inside it, you're simply paying for a zip.
